The weather board was fixed before anyone touched it.
Yesterday it had flashed a red door every seven minutes. By morning it showed sun, rain, wind, and the right tram delays. A small silver pawprint glowed near the lower corner.
Byte leaned closer. “That is clean work.”
Shadow checked the service-room record. “No caretaker tag.”
“Still clean,” Byte said, softer this time.
Silver Repairs
They found six more silver marks before noon.
A library checkout terminal stopped restarting. A permit counter held its form. A clinic intake station accepted room numbers again. Two public boards stopped showing red doors. One school desk terminal came back with the correct runtime version and no repair card.
Each system looked better, and each one had skipped the Repair Lane. Each one left the Consent Ledger blank.
The silver repairs moved faster than any caretaker route. The service-room lamps flickered from extra update chatter even after the affected terminals looked calm.
“If it works, why are you worried?” a shopkeeper asked.
Jinx turned the blank ledger row toward her. “Because no one knows what changed.”
Missing Permission
Byte built a small model in the hideout: an old runtime terminal, a silver pawprint, and a green screen that worked afterward.
“It repairs the symptom,” he said. Shadow moved a second card into the model: OWNER NOT ASKED. Jinx added ROLLBACK UNKNOWN. Cipher added SOURCE UNKNOWN. Grimalkin added NEW TRUST PROBLEM, and Shadow added REVERIFY ALL.
The model no longer looked clever. It looked crowded.

Byte did not argue. He took the silver pawprint card out of the model and set it beside the Repair Lane lamp.
“Then we do not copy it,” he said.
Outside, the fixed weather board kept telling the truth. The blank ledger kept telling another one.

Even if behavior looks helpful, a self-spreading repair that enters systems without consent creates a new security and operations problem.
The Helpful Ghost is built around that tension. The fixed terminals and boards make Byte’s admiration understandable, and the blank Consent Ledger makes the danger visible. The episode preserves the real lesson: technical success is not the same as trustworthy repair when owners, records, source checks, and rollback paths are missing.
